Western Australia tightens gambling laws with penalties

Western Australia is tightening its gaming laws by integrating higher penalties for violations.

This news comes after the Perth Casino Royal Commission’s recommended regulatory reforms in the gambling market. The new legislation, now passed by Parliament, will give more authority to the Gaming and Wagering Commission (GWC).

The reforms include significantly increased penalties for various breaches, strengthening the state’s regulatory framework. Paul Papalia, the Minister for Racing and Gaming, has also been granted additional powers to guide the GWC, ensuring a more precise approach to gambling breaches.

Minister Papalia commented:

“The law reform is designed to significantly expand the regulator’s compliance and enforcement powers and increase the penalties to ensure they are an effective deterrent to non-compliance.”

Gary Dreibergs, chair of GWC, said

“The substantial increase in penalties will act as a more effective deterrent and a more appropriate punishment for lawbreakers who may regard current lower penalties as an acceptable risk when they consider the profits that can be made from subverting the laws.”

The reform is set to make it easier for Western Australia to adopt national policies, such as the National Consumer Protection Framework for Online Gambling and the National Policy on Match-Fixing in Sport. Moreover, it will also create a safer and more trustworthy gambling environment.
