UK plans to simplify iGaming taxation with single system

The UK government is looking to change the taxation system for iGaming, bringing only one unified system instead of the currently existing three different systems.
Currently, the UK has Remote Gaming Duty, General Betting Duty, and Pool Betting Duty taxes. And the move to change the system is to make it easier to manage for both gambling companies and tax officials.
As things stand, remote gaming profits are taxed at 21%, while the other two duties take 15%. The government hasn’t said what the new unified rate will be yet—that’ll come in a future budget.
According to James Murray, the Exchequer Secretary, the gambling world has changed a lot in the past decade. With iGaming now pulling in nearly £7 billion a year, Murray believes the tax system needs to catch up.
The government is open for public feedback until July 21, 2025, and invites industry professionals and health experts to come up with their ideas and opinions on the matter.
If all goes as planned, the new tax could go into effect by October 2027. The idea is to simplify the rules while building a fair, more responsible gambling environment.a
