The government of Australia has announced that it will introduce a new national register to allow users to opt out of gambling advertising in an effort to come to an agreement with the opposition and pass the proposed gambling reforms.

As explained by officials, the opt-out register will work similarly to a “no call” register for spam calls, which will let consumers register once instead of turning off gambling ads for each platform separately.

The proposal was introduced by Communications Minister Anika Wells, who further added that the measure would require a separate bill in the House of Representatives. According to the initiative, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) would be responsible for creating and managing the register and supervising compliance.

Wells commented:

“We are particularly concerned by evidence about wagering inducements and the role these practices can play in encouraging gambling and exacerbating gambling-related harm. It is expected that the government’s reforms will respond to these concerns by introducing new restrictions on inducement-based marketing and establishing the wagering advertising opt-out register, which will provide Australians with a one-stop shop to opt out of seeing wagering advertising on online platforms.”

Additionally, gambling operators will have to pay a new levy to fund the implementation of the opt-out register, which will prevent the costs from falling on taxpayers, as noted by the government.
