Australia to ease “Murphy’s Report” gambling ad ban

Australian government might soon respond to Murphy Report 2023. Although, a total ban on gambling ads is unlikely to be enforced.

The government wants to limit gambling ads to two per hour. Also, gambling advertisements will be banned one hour before and after live sports broadcasts.

Jamie Nettleton, partner at gaming law firm Addisons said:

“These proposed restrictions are currently in the draft stage and have not yet gone to cabinet so there is no clear timeline for implementation.”

In June 2023, the House of Representatives Committee on social policy and Legal Affairs recommended a comprehensive prohibition of gambling advertisements within 3 years in both broadcast and online media.

The paper was written by MP Peta Murphy, who died in December last year. Online gambling advertisements could also possibly be banned from commercial radios from 8:30 am to 9:00 am and from 3:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for one hour daily as reports suggest.

Independent senator David Pocock wrote in a post on X.

“A phased in gambling ad ban would destroy sport – where have we heard that before? What a total cop out & betrayal of the late Peta Murphy’s legacy. There is support in the parliament to implement the Murphy Review recommendations in full – not some watered down policy to appease the gambling industry.”

Initially in its submission to the Murphy Report last year, the betting operator Tabcorp had supported reducing gambling advertising.

Similarly, in its recent full-year results, PointsBet reported taking measures to reduce gambling advertisements. The company is no longer airing its commercials on free-to-air between 6 pm to 9.30 pm.

Furthermore, they are removing their naming rights of stadiums and concentrating only on sponsorship contracts that will last until 2025 with Manly Sea Eagles and Cronulla Sharks respectively.
