Denmark gambling regulator unable to ban prediction markets

Denmark’s gambling regulator, Spillemyndigheden, confirmed that citizens are accessing prediction market platforms, but the current laws prohibit regulators from intervening and leave the authority unable to block these services unless they target Danish players.

Despite Danish users accessing platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket, the regulator’s Director Anders Dorph explained that enforcement requires clear evidence that the platforms target the Danish market. Without indicators like accepting Danish currency, offering Danish payment methods, or listing markets that appeal to Danish consumers, cease-and-desist letters or DNS blocking cannot be applied.

Anders Dorph stated:

“Prediction markets are already here; we see customers using Polymarket and Kalshi. We don’t have figures on how many people are using those sites, but we will definitely block them if they target the Danish market and use DNS blocking on their websites if we see any signs. As it is right now, they are not meeting the criteria, which is that they have to target the Danish market. For example, if you can use Danish currency or Danish payment methods or if there is an option to put money on a Danish lower football league match, which is not well-known around the world, that would be targeting the market.”

At the moment, the regulator monitors activity but cannot act on it, as Dorph added that the Spillemyndigheden will be able to move quickly if the mentioned criteria are met.
