Denmark to get rid of 79 illegal gambling sites
Denmark’s Gambling Authority (DGA), Spillemyndigheden, will block 79 illegal gambling websites in its territory.
Denmark is a Scandinavian country comprising the Jutland Peninsula and numerous islands. The country started to get rid of illegal gambling websites in 2012, and this year’s number of blocked websites is the highest number for a single year, making it a total of 162.
At the end of August, a court decision allowed Denmark’s Gambling Authority (DGA), Spillemyndigheden, to shut down 79 illegal gambling websites such as sports betting, online casinos, and skin betting platforms (this is a kind of gambling where players use fake money like “Robux” from the popular game Roblox to make bets and win prizes.)
Anders Dorph, who’s in charge of the DGA, commented on this:
“We pay particular attention to this new type of site. Roblox is a game that is very popular among children and young people under the age of 18. Our children should not be introduced to gambling when they play video games, so I am very pleased that we have blocked access to these sites.”
Data from Denmark’s gambling helpline, StopSpillet, shows that 41% of cases since 2019 have come from people aged 25 or younger, while the self-exclusion register, ROFUS, reports a similar percentage for users under 30. This means that those websites illegally targeted not only young adults but even kids.
Besides blocking those websites, the regulator plans to strengthen users’ protection from the risks of illegal gambling. This means when a user tries to enter the blocked website, he will be immediately directed to the warning page, which will explain that the website is illegal and doesn’t work in compliance with the law. It is crucial to keep the warning page simple and easy so users don’t bypass the links.
Till now, DGA has blocked 438 illegal websites in total.
