Entain targets Oddsmonkey in a new intellectual property case

Entain launched a legal action in the English High Court, targeting Oddsmonkey in what could shape up to be a high-profile intellectual property battle within the gambling industry.

On 21 August, Entain filed a case against matched betting firm Oddsmonkey, listed as Entain Operations Limited and others v Liquidity Trading Limited and others. While the filing has drawn attention as a potential new intellectual property battle in the gambling sector, the specifics of Entain’s claims have not yet been disclosed.

The latest filing has been lodged as a civil Part 7 Claim, with Entain represented by media and technology law specialists Wiggin LLP. Alongside Entain Operations Limited, the co-claimants include LC International Limited, Ladbrokes Betting & Gaming Limited, and 365 Scores UK Limited.

The defendants named are Liquidity Trading Limited, Liquidity PA Limited, and Samuel Stoffel. Stoffel is a well-known industry figure, having previously founded matched betting site Outplayed.com, which merged with Oddsmonkey in late 2024. Although he no longer has any direct management role, his name appears in the proceedings. Matched betting—where bettors take advantage of bookmakers’ free bet promotions to secure guaranteed returns—remains a legal practice, though one that doesn’t have the best reputation among operators.

Oddsmonkey and Outplayed.com have grown by offering guides and software that enable users to convert bookmaker bonuses into profit—a model operators argue weakens the effectiveness of their promotions.

While Entain’s latest court action may be seen by some as a move against this practice, the precise nature of its claims has not yet been disclosed.
