France adds mandatory betting loss limits for young adults

The National Assembly of France has amended the Professional Sports Bill to include new protections for players and athletes, introducing loss limits for users aged 18 to 25.

The new law will require operators to add age limits on player losses, although a clear amount hasn’t been set yet, with the government aiming to present it after consulting with the country’s gambling regulator, the ANJ. The main goal of the amendments is to reduce young adults’ excessive gambling.

The new president of the ANJ, Pascal Chevremont, will be responsible for supervising the regulatory body’s input on the loss caps. At the same time, the previous president, Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin, had publicly praised the proposals, stressing that two-thirds of individuals under 25 have placed sports bets in France.

Concerns over young adults’ rising participation in sports betting has especially increased during the World Cup period, with authorities warning that the tournament will drive higher betting volumes.

If approved, the amendments will follow in the steps of countries like the Netherlands, Norway, and the UK, which have already introduced similar protection measures in their jurisdictions.

Aside from changes in betting regulations, the bill also seeks to improve financial supervision in French sports and fight against audiovisual piracy that targets the economic aspect of professional competitions.
