Gibraltar opens its border with Spain
A new framework for border crossings has been introduced in Gibraltar as the UK and the European Union signed an awaited treaty, which is set to come into force on July 15, removing Gibraltar’s border controls with Spain.
Under the new agreement signed in Brussels, checks at the Gibraltar-Spain border will no longer be conducted, as the territory will become a de facto part of the Schengen free-movement area. Following the approval of the treaty, residents will be permitted to enter Spain without passport stamps, while Spanish citizens will be able to cross the Gibraltar border with ID cards.
Additionally, British and Gibraltar officials will carry out UK border checks, while Spanish authorities will perform Schengen checks.
Gibraltar’s Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, stated:
“This will be a work in progress for us as we start this operation. Business will now be able to see a footfall increase, which is not going to be restrained by a potential queue.”
With the removal of the border, additional safeguards are expected to be introduced, including a modern financial system for employment training, better coordination on social security issues, and protections for cross-border workers. One important goal of the treaty is to streamline border operations, as Gibraltar’s economy depends strongly on a cross-border workforce, especially in the sectors of tourism, hospitality, and online gaming, with the latter accounting for 30% of the country’s GDP and regulating 54 gambling operators.
The agreement marks the end of one of the final issues left behind by Brexit, giving Gibraltar more economic stability. However, the treaty doesn’t mean that Gibraltar’s sovereignty will be transferred to Spain.
