Inida’s Supreme Court to hear all cases challenging new gambling law
India’s Supreme Court will hear all cases challenging the country’s new online gaming law, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gambling Bill.
As a response to the central government’s request to transfer all petitions from different high courts to the Supreme Court and speed up the hearing process, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and Delhi will no longer be able to hear all those cases challenging the bill.
Passed in August 2025, the law bans all real-money games and online games involving money transactions. From day one, the bill has faced multiple legal challenges, with companies and individuals seeking to stop it from being enforced.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, being one of those who promoted the consolidation of the bill, noted that key points had already been debated before Justice J.B. Pardiwala’s bench, and it will be easier to reach a quicker resolution.
Some high courts had already turned down requests for relief. With all cases now before the Supreme Court, a final decision on the law’s legality is expected in the coming months.
