New York officially bans online sweepstakes casinos

On December 5, 2025, New York officially banned online sweepstakes casinos, following a law signed by Governor Kathy Hochul.

New rules target all those websites that let players exchange virtual game currency for cash prizes or cash equivalents. Any site offering the chance to win money through these sweepstakes is now illegal in the state.

The law also extends to companies that support or promote sweepstakes games. This includes technology providers, game developers, payment processors, platform operators, and media affiliates. In one word, anyone helping to run or advertise sweepstakes casinos in New York could face serious consequences.

Violating the law comes with heavy fines ranging from $10,000 to $100,000 per violation. The law doesn’t exclude businesses from the action, as in case of violation, they may lose their gaming licenses or be banned from obtaining one in the future.

Senate Bill S5935, which introduced the ban, was signed and took effect immediately. Authorities in New York are now prepared to enforce the new regulations strictly, showing a major change for the iGaming market in the state.
