Parliamentary commission to target online betting in Brazil

Ahead of its new regulated market launch on January 1, 2025, Brazil is introducing a new Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (Comissão Parlamentar de Inquérito, CPI), called the Bets CPI, to investigate the influence of online betting on family finances, its impact on social media, and potential connections to crime.

The betting CPI will be led by Senator Soraya Thronicke, who is the author of the initiative. To complete the inquiries, the commission will have only 130 days. Not only betting influence will be under the target, but also money laundering procedures.

Senator Soraya Thronicke said:

“The matter is extremely serious, involves organized crime, and involves people of great national and international prominence.”

Senators Dr. Hiran Gonçalves will be the commission’s chair and Alessandro Vieirathe vice chair. Together with Soraya Thronicke, they formally requested assistance from Brazil’s Federal Police to investigate possible cases of money laundering and other misconduct.

The SPA, the government’s Secretariat of Prizes and Bets, is focused on safeguarding players in the regulated market, enforcing marketing restrictions, and ensuring operators meet safety standards. With the new regulations starting in 2025, strict anti-money laundering (AML), counter-terrorism financing (CTF), and strong IT security measures will be enforced to prevent excessive gambling. Moreover, credit card betting will also be banned in Brazil.
