South Carolina weighs casino legalization
South Carolina lawmakers debate a bill to legalize casinos, starting with Orangeburg’s Santee Mall, promising jobs and revenue despite strong opposition and social concerns.
On Tuesday night, state lawmakers spent more than two hours listening to testimonies on a new proposal, with the main message of the I-95 Economic and Education Stimulus Act that could bring casinos to select areas. Supporters argue the bill could deliver much-needed economic revitalization.
President of the Orangeburg Chamber of Commerce, James McQuilla, commented:
“The schools will benefit; your local economy and restaurants will benefit. Whenever you have jobs that are there for local individuals, then you’re going to see a decrease in crime. I think it could be a destination, not just a drop-off point.”
According to a News 13 report, projections estimate more than $75 million in annual tax revenue, nearly 5,000 jobs, and more than 4 million visitors each year.
However, critics still voice concerns:
“These are systems that feed on desperation. They profit from loss and mask addiction as opportunity.”
No vote was taken during the hearing. If the bill passes, developers will still face strict requirements: a $500,000 non-refundable application fee, a $2 million licensing fee, and a $200 million minimum investment in infrastructure. Moreover, to move forward, casinos will also need local and political support.
