The Star Sydney license suspension extended once again
The New South Wales Independent Casino Commission (NICC) has extended The Star Group’s Sydney casino license suspension once again.
The Star Sydney has been under a license suspension for the last three years after NICC-commissioned reviews by Adam Bell found multiple regulatory failures between October 2022 and August 2024.
On March 12, 2026, the NICC got a pathway-to-suitability submission from the casino, in which it restated its January correspondence of not seeking a license determination in March 2026.
Initially, the NICC didn’t fully cancel The Star’s license, believing that it could satisfy the commission with the necessary actions. As a result, Nicolas Weeks was appointed as manager of the casino to allow the establishment to offer its services. The current extension means that the license suspension will remain effective, as Weeks’ appointment was extended until September 30, 2026.
NICC Chief Commissioner Philip Crawford stated:
“The new owners are making significant changes to the operation of the business, which are being monitored closely by the NICC. This includes work to make the business more financially sustainable in the long term, which will assist them in demonstrating suitability. We will continue to work with The Star on their remediation priorities so that the casino can remedy the serious concerns raised in the two Bell inquiries.”
Additionally, Star Entertainment Australia got a $390 million WhiteHawk deal for refinancing its debt, with the process scheduled to be completed by May 15, 2026, in order to avoid default.
