PointsBet has also agreed to an independent audit of its Ontario business, with the auditor and method subject to AGCO approval. No suspension date has been set, and the reason for the shorter penalty was not made public. The regulator said the settlement ends the proceeding.
The AGCO first announced its plan to suspend PointsBet in February, the first time a Canadian regulator had moved against a licensed operator this way. The case stems from the 2024 insider betting scandal involving NBA player Jontay Porter, with the regulator alleging that PointsBet failed to spot and report suspicious bets linked to him.
When the allegations surfaced in early 2024, the AGCO asked Ontario sportsbooks whether they had taken bets on Porter or reported suspicious activity. PointsBet replied late, saying it had not offered such bets, then changed its answer after a Department of Justice indictment laid out the scheme. The AGCO’s review of the operator’s data later confirmed warning signs it said should have been caught at the time.
PointsBet said in February that it was “disappointed” with the decision and put its first answer down to human error during an organizational transition.
The AGCO previously sanctioned PointsBet in 2022 over advertising and in late 2023 for responsible gambling breaches.
