Alex Smith named Fanatics Chief Legal Officer
On March 16, 2026, Fanatics Betting and Gaming announced the appointment of Alex Smith as Chief Legal Officer to lead legal, regulatory, compliance, and government affairs for the sports betting and iGaming division.
Smith joined Fanatics in 2021 as VP of legal and regulatory compliance, and in his new role, he will report to CEO Matt King. Before that, Smith held regulatory roles at FanDuel.
CEO Matt King commented:
“Alex was one of our first hires, and he helped build the legal and regulatory apparatus that has allowed us to launch products rapidly in legal sports betting, iCasino, and prediction markets. As we continue to grow, Alex is the perfect person to lead our legal and regulatory functions into the future.”
Additionally, Fanatics appointed Sara Tait, who served as the Executive Director of the Indiana Gaming Commission in the past, as senior vice president and head of legal and regulated industries.
Smith commented on Tait’s appointment:
“Sara is a well-respected former gaming regulator who also has experience in the private sector, making her the ideal choice to lead critical legal and regulatory efforts. The legal and regulatory landscape for sports betting, iCasino, and prediction markets is constantly changing, and having someone who has been on both sides of the regulatory landscape will be invaluable to us as we continue our growth trajectory.”
She will be responsible for the company’s relationships with federal and state regulators and will maintain licenses and registrations with government bodies.
Nine sportsbook operators have applied to the Missouri Gaming Commission ahead of the state’s September 12 deadline, all aiming to launch mobile betting on December 1.
