August as North Carolina’s worst-performing month

North Carolina’s mobile sports betting operators generated US$33.8m, which is 20.1% lower compared to 2023.

North Carolina is a state in the Southeastern region of the United States. The state introduced sports betting on March 12. When comparing August’s results to March’s results, sports betting revenue numbers appear to be more serious, as there has been a 43.8% drop in handles from March to August.

Additionally, revenue in August was down 49.2% from $66.5 million reported in March, highlighting a strong decline in earnings despite the increase in total handle month-over-month.

According to data from the North Carolina State Lottery Commission, the total handle, which includes promotions, reached $357.3 million. This represents an 8.9% increase from July’s handle of $398 million. However, the tax revenue for August dropped to $6.1 million, marking a significant decline of 20.1% from July’s $7.6 million.

On the contrary to North Carolina, Macau, an autonomous region on the south coast of China, had August as its best-performing month.

Earlier this year, in July, North Carolina announced that the state supports responsible gambling initiatives in an attempt to broaden the services for its residents who struggle with gambling. North Carolina’s intensification campaign against gambling-related issues is underway.

North Carolina is not the only state that is committed to protecting the people who live there when it comes to safe betting activities. Just recently, in Vermont, a website was created leveraging the same idea about responsible gaming courtesy of the state’s mental health authority.
