Australia reports cocnerning rise in underage gambling

According to data from The Australia Institute, one in three young people aged 12 to 19 are gambling, with nearly 900,000 teens involved.
During the 2022–23 financial year, Australians placed more than $244 billion in bets. While some of that came back as winnings, the country still lost a massive $31.5 billion which is more than what people lose in Las Vegas.
On average, each adult gambler loses about $2,942 a year. But for frequent gamblers, the yearly loss jumps to nearly $35,000. Teens between 12 and 17 spent around $18.4 million on gambling last year, even though they’re under the legal age. For older teens, aged 18–19, the number was $213 million. Many of them are first introduced to gambling through video games with “loot boxes,” friendly bets, or flashy online ads.
Experts warn that gambling habits picked up in teenage years often carry on into adulthood. Despite tightening gambling laws with penalties, the government has delayed serious action.
Researchers say it’s time for real action before gambling becomes an even deeper part of youth culture.
