Bangladesh urges Google to act against gambling content

Bangladesh’s telecom regulator, the BTRC, has called on Google to introduce strengthened systems for detecting and removing betting and gambling content from its platforms.

The request was made by the BTRC on September 6, 2026, during a meeting with Google representatives, where the regulator asked the company to use artificial intelligence-supported mechanisms to identify harmful content as soon as it’s published. The BTRC’s Chairman Muhammad Emdad Ul Bari, officials from the BTRC’s Systems and Services and Engineering and Operations teams, and Google South Asia’s head of public Policy Kyle Hardner were among the attendees of the meeting.

The BTRC shared:

“The Chairman of BTRC has advised Google to adopt a system for quickly identifying and removing harmful content from various Google platforms and to implement effective measures for identifying and removing such content. He also emphasized the importance of implementing a coordinated and coordinated strategy to identify and remove such content, in line with the government’s multi-stakeholder collaboration and mutual cooperation initiative.”

Additionally, authorities from the regulatory body urged improved collaboration between Bangladesh’s government and Google, arguing that it would help cover a broader scope of harmful content published online. The BTRC Chairman further proposed that Google open a local office and establish AI labs to train engineers in the field and improve their skills.
