Belgium’s online betting records a decline against 2022

According to Kansspelcommissie, when comparing the UEFA Euro 2024 season to the FIFA World Cup 2022 season, online sports betting in Belgium recorded a significant decline.
Belgium has a regulated gambling market with various types of legal gambling activities, such as casinos, sports betting, and online gambling. During Euro 2024, sports betting saw almost 1,031 newly registered online users. This is less than the accounts from World Cup 2022 and Euro 2020, which had an average of 1,48 and 1,175 new accounts individually.
Daily online accounts also decreased from an average of 3,961 during the World Cup to 3,298 for Euro 2024, although this surpassed Euro 2020’s average of 3,022. This means that there is also a decline in daily active players’s numbers. Players aged 21 to 29 were the most active, accounting for 31% of participants.
Total online wagers during Euro 2024 reached €8.6 million, with the Belgian national team’s match against Slovakia generating the highest interest at €14.9 million.
Unlike Euro 2024, Olympic betting saw limited engagement, with 134,745 online players daily. BAGO, the association of private gambling operators, attributed these declines to enhanced responsible gambling measures. Both organizations highlight the importance of combating illegal online gambling, which reportedly forms 60% of Belgium’s market.
