Betfair is facing a UK High Court trial in connection with a case of user suicide, which claims that the operator failed to protect the player and breached duty of care standards.

The trial began on June 4, 2026, and revolves around the 2021 suicide of Luke Ashton, who took his own life after an extensive gambling history with Betfair, as a result of which he lost huge sums of money. The coroner’s 2023 inquest showed that Ashton suffered from gambling addiction; however, it was revealed that the operator had classified him as a low-risk gambler.

The case later developed as Ashton’s wife and family members filed a lawsuit against Betfair, accusing it of not appropriately engaging with Ashton and not addressing his addiction in any way.

Further investigations found that Betfair hadn’t communicated with Ashton between 2019 and his death in 2021 in any meaningful way, and the operator’s system failed to flag his risky gambling behavior.

In 2025, the UKGC received the materials regarding the suicide case but chose not to launch any action against Betfair. Following this, Ashton’s wife, Annie Ashton, filed an additional judicial review to challenge the Commission’s decision.

The trial is expected to last around three weeks, during which it will be assessed whether gambling operators have an obligation to intervene when problem gambling patterns are identified and whether they owe a duty of care to users with gambling addictions.
