BetMGM responds to Illinois tax hike with $2.50 minimum bet

Starting July 16, 2025, BetMGM will require a $2.50 minimum bet on all wagers in Illinois, driven by the state’s new law, which increases taxes on sportsbooks.

Illinois introduced a new per-bet fee on sports wagers back in June. Unlike its competitors, FanDuel and DraftKings, which as a response added a $0.50 fee to every bet, BetMGM decided to take another approach and raise the minimum wager amount. The new fee will affect every type of bet, including parlays, straight bets, Same Game Parlays, and more.

While the added cost may discourage some players from placing bets, BetMGM hopes its approach feels less like a penalty and more like a natural adjustment, as most of the players already place bets of $2.50 or more.

Smaller sportsbooks, for now, are avoiding added costs altogether, hoping that unhappy customers will choose their platforms as an alternative option.

Still, according to industry experts, BetMGM’s strategy could become the golden standard. The competition gets fiercer day by day, so it is crucial for sportsbooks to adjust to any change and turn it to their benefit.

For Illinois bettors, the message is clear: despite the chosen platform, betting will get more and more expensive.
