Betway and Betsson acquire sports betting licences in Germany
Betway and Betsson are the two latest operators to acquire sports betting licenses in Germany. There were also three divisions of Tipico who also obtained licences, which means that there are now 27 operators with sports betting licences in the German territory. Wegame’s licence will be covering Betsson, Casinowinner, Betsafe, Nordicbet, Rizk Sport and Schnellwetten.
Betway had teamed up with SV Werder Bremen, VfB Stuttgart and Hertha BSC, who are all Bundesliga clubs, before even obtaining the approval for the licence.
Anthony Werkman, group chief executive at Betway, commented saying:
“We are thrilled to announce that Betway has received a sports betting licence from the Regional Council in Darmstadt. As a leading regulated online betting and gaming company this gives us the transparency and security to cement our position as a responsible gaming provider in the German market. We look forward to delivering on our commitment to our German customers, offering them an unrivalled online sports betting experience in a safe, fair and responsible environment.”
Germany had a revamped protocol which was set into motion in October of 2020, which was when the 15 first operators received licences in Germany. The treaty had to be reviewed because of a legal battle with Vierklee, the Austrian bookmaker. The first batch of licenses incorporated four for GVC Holdings, and approvals for Tipico, Novomatic and Gauselmann Group.
In November, we witnessed Bet-at-home, Interwetten and Bet3000 acquiring their licences in the country, and in February of 2021, Betkick Sportwettenservice and Betago both also were issues their own licences.
