BGC welcomes stability from potential Labour victory

Michael Dugher, chair of the Betting and Gaming Council, stated that the UK trade association is pleased with Labour’s general election victory, considering the potential impact on the industry and its white paper.

Labour secured a decisive majority over the Conservatives in Thursday’s election, marking their return to power for the first time since 2010.

The UK’s gambling industry has seen changes in both land-based and online sectors since then and was catching up with innovations through the white paper until the election interrupted its progress.

Labour’s manifesto emphasizes their commitment to reducing gambling harm and reforming gambling regulation with stronger protections.

Dugher said:

“BGC members are currently undergoing significant regulatory changes following the white paper, which Labour supported, and much of this work will continue post-election. Our members now have the political certainty needed to plan and invest for a sustainable future.”

He noted that the BGC and its members remain committed to collaborating with Labour to implement evidence-based, balanced regulatory changes from the white paper. These measures aim to protect the vulnerable while allowing responsible betting without unnecessary intrusion.
