Brazil adds restrictions on prediction markets

The government of Brazil has announced that prediction market contracts connected to sports, politics, and entertainment will be banned effective May 4, 2026.

The initiative was officially announced on April 24, 2026, as Gabrial Galípolo, the president of Banco Central do Brasil, signed resolution No. 5,298, according to which the Anatel national telecommunications agency will block access to prediction markets with the same system that’s used against illegal gambling websites in the country.

It’s also been revealed that Anatel has already blocked 28 platforms that were positioned as providers of derivative financial products and were offering bets on the now-banned categories.

Brazil’s Minister of Finance, Dario Durigan, commented:

“Brazil has established clear rules for the operation of fixed-odds bets, and there will be no room for those who try to operate on the sidelines of this system or create structures to circumvent the legislation.”

The Minister added that President da Silva is also still concerned about the high debts of citizens connected to gambling, with the government introducing new regulations to strengthen supervision of the sector.

Miriam Belchior, chief of staff to President da Silva, stated:

“This measure seeks to protect income, avoid financial losses for people, and reduce the exposure of families to unsafe practices. Although they are often marketed as investment opportunities or agreements between users, these platforms operate on the margins of the financial system. In practice, they are used to circumvent legislation. The measure aligns Brazil with the best international practices.”

Belchoir additionally stressed that other countries like France, Germany, Argentina, and Italy have restricted or banned prediction markets because they operate as illegal gambling.
