Brazil Senate delays casino bill vote over opposition
A Senate vote aimed at legalizing casinos and other land-based gambling in Brazil has been postponed as Senate President Davi Alcolumbre pulled the bill from Wednesday’s agenda, saying there weren’t enough senators present to proceed.
The delay comes as a result of strict opposition from lawmakers. While the Ministries of Finance and Tourism support the bill and fiduciary it as a boost for federal revenue and tourism, others in the Lula administration, especially those focused on health and social programs, have serious concerns.
They worry legal gambling could worsen addiction problems and financially hurt families who rely on government support like Bolsa Família. Moreover, they are even threatening to publicly shame colleagues who vote in favor. Senator Irajá, who’s been pushing the bill forward, has even faced criticism from members of his party.
President Lula commented:
“But what about the gambling we see on television today? In sports? Kids with cell phones in their hands, placing bets all day long? Who can stop that?”
If Congress passes the bill, Lula will sign it. However, as of now, there’s no new date for a vote.
