Brazil Senate weighs two bills targeting gambling ads

Brazil’s Senate targets gambling ads with lawmakers now reviewing two new bills, both aimed at tightening how betting companies promote themselves, especially around kids and vulnerable groups.

The first proposal, from Senator Styvenson Valentim aims to completely ban gambling ads. It’s a bold move that rewrites the 2018 law which first allowed online betting. The second bill is more specific no influencers, no celebrities, and no sports teams promoting bets.

Senator Carlos Portinho commented:

“We waited a year for gambling to be regulated and effectively enforced. The situation is getting worse. Advertising is massive and is directed at people who are often not even the target audience, like children.”

Brazil’s betting market went live in January, together with new rules trying to limit irresponsible ads.  Still, some argue that restrictions could confuse consumers even more.

Pietro Lorenzoni from Brazil’s National Gaming Association said:

“Ads help people know what’s legal.”

For now, both bills await a vote.
