DraftKings faces lawsuit over voided $14.2M golf bets

An Iowa man sues DraftKings for $14.2M after it voids his winning golf bets, which were based on a weather-shortened Pebble Beach tournament.

Nicholas Bavas, from Dallas County, bet just $325 on five golf parlays during the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He didn’t bet randomly. He used weather forecasts to predict that rain would cut the tournament short.

His picks matched the leaderboard when the third round ended, which became the official result after the final round was canceled due to heavy rain. With all five parlays hitting, Bavas stood to win a massive $14.2 million.

But instead of paying out, DraftKings voided the bets and refunded his stake, citing a rule that says futures bets placed after what becomes the final round don’t count.

Bavas disagrees:

“When DraftKings makes an error or accepts a bet it should not have, or when unforeseen events occur that require an unanticipated large payout by DraftKings, then it seems different rules apply.”

Bavais is not alone. DraftKings voided other bets also for bettors who saw the rain coming and made similar picks. Now, the company is facing another lawsuit under customer protection law. DraftKings has long been at the center of legal battles with players. Recently, Pennsylvania gamblers sued DraftKings, claiming misleading promos that the company is using to target users with gambling addiction.
