DraftKings upgrades sports betting license in Massachusetts

DraftKings, an American gambling company that offers sportsbooks and daily fantasy sports services, has applied for a five-year sports betting license in Massachusetts.

DraftKings has operated in Massachusetts under a temporary license since February 2023, when it launched its sportsbook in the state. Now, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission recommends that DraftKings apply for a full license instead of a five-year one.

To do so, DraftKings has to improve internal controls and update fingerprints for key personnel. Moreover, MGC also urged DraftKings to resolve ongoing civil litigation and regulatory matters while reducing compliance violations, mentioning the company’s history of over 50 breaches in other states.

Despite these concerns, the MGC finds DraftKings as one of the key players that prevent the advancement of illegal market.

Jordan Maynard, MGC Chair, said:

“You provide a great service to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, keeping people from the illegal market.”

Eileen O’Brien, MGC Commissioner, added:

“This commission very much cares about cultures of compliance, and in my view, that starts with the tone at the top of the organizations.”

Currently, DraftKings is waiting for the MGC’s approval. The next step will be another hearing in February 2025, with additional audits underway. By addressing all the mentioned deficiencies, DraftKings hopes to secure its place as a trusted leader in Massachusetts’ sports betting industry.
