Dutch Kansspelautoriteit switches to new governance model

From January 1, 2026, the Gambling Authority of the Netherlands, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), transitioned its governance structure and is now operating under a new board in an effort to strengthen oversight and player protection.

The new board includes one full-time chair and two part-time directors.

The regulator stated:

“The new structure is intended to respond to the increasing complexity of gambling oversight, driven by technological developments such as artificial intelligence, the growth of illegal gambling supply, and intensified international regulatory cooperation.”

Michel Groothuzien will remain in charge of operations and continue to be the domestic and international leader of the organization.

The new directors will provide strategic expertise in the fields of governance, integrity, and digital transformation.

The structural change will see the KSA divided into three directorates: Player Protection & Management Advice, Permits & Supervision, and Digitalisation, Analysis & Business Operations. This is aimed at creating clearer lines of responsibility and improving decision-making.

The changes come at an important time for Dutch gambling, with the Netherlands preparing for a legislative overhaul in 2026. The Kamer plans to repeal and replace the Remote Gambling Act (KOA), which was the framework that launched the regulated online gambling market back in 2020.
