EGBA applauds EU vote to approve Markers of Harm Standard

With the support of European standardization bodies for a new draft standard of harm markers, the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) welcomed a significant step towards more player protection.

The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) welcomed the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) vote on the draft European standard on markers of harm. The draft standard was voted through with a resounding majority of national standardization bodies, a significant step towards the safeguarding of players throughout Europe.

EGBA Secretary General Maarten Haijer stated:

“The positive outcome of this vote is a real testament to the power of collaboration across our sector. When EGBA first proposed this initiative to CEN, we envisioned creating a commonly agreed standard that would benefit players across Europe. We’re delighted with the support the standard has received, and I want to personally thank all the stakeholders who participated in this process. The result shows what happens when we work together to strengthen player protection.”

EGBA identified the project leader, Dr. Maris Catania, and AFNOR, the French standardization organization acting as CEN Secretariat.

EGBA Senior Manager EU Affairs, Vasiliki Panousi, said:

“This will be the first commonly agreed European standard for identifying risky gambling behaviours, and it will offer an essential building block for effective harm prevention in Europe. The cooperation to develop the standard was extremely valuable, bringing together diverse expertise from across the continent.”

The CEN official finalization process will be completed by early 2026, with voting wrapped up on September 25. The standard will be published and released for voluntary adoption by European gaming regulators and operators.
