Esports becomes official betting option in Colombia
Colombia has officially recognized esports as a sport, opening new betting opportunities for Colombian fans and expanding the market nationwide.
This shift comes after Congress unanimously approved Bill 026, which cleared the final legislative challenges needed to integrate esports into the National Sports System. Now, games like Dota 2, Counter-Strike 2, Valorant, and League of Legends can be bet on legally, providing a fresh opportunity for both players and businesses.
Marco Emilio Hincapié, President of Coljuegos, the national gaming regulator, praised the decision:
“Esports already have legislative backing. We know that these sports are the present and the future; that is why we are not going to be left out of these technological advances. These sports will allow us to boost and expand the offer of the online gambling sector that we regulate.”
The Colombian Olympic Committee has also welcomed this move, with President Ciro Solano Hurtado noting that it aligns with the global trend, as even the International Olympic Committee has recognized esports as a sport.
