Europe integrates new measures to combat youth gambling

The Council of Europe has launched a new project aimed at protecting youth from the risks associated with online gambling.

Gambling is a growing problem across Europe, especially among youngsters. Research from Eotvos Lorand University in Budapest highlights that, unlike adolescents, younger age groups are at risk of gambling addiction. The Council of Europe’s Pompidou Group, which originally focused on anti-drug policies, has also noted that gambling companies design their products to be highly engaging, attracting new players.

Researcher Orsolya Kiraly pointed out that 16.3% of youths who bet on sports are at risk of developing a gambling disorder, with the figure rising to 26.4% among those who gamble online. Loot boxes and digital games based on chance have also drawn attention. While Belgium and the Netherlands have banned them, other countries like the UK have yet to regulate them as gambling.

The Council of Europe is working to address the breaches in national policies. By creating a pan-European strategy, the Council aims to combat the issue of youth gambling on a continental scale.

European countries take steps to minimize gambling harms

European countries, one by one, are implementing new restrictions and bans on the gambling industry. Recently, Belgium raised the legal gambling age to 21 while Italy launched a new online gambling regime. All these revisions are aimed at combating side effects that come together with gambling.
