Football players Derrick Jones and Yaw Yeboah have received lifetime bans from the Major League Soccer (MLS) after both were found to have breached the league’s gambling policy.

After MLS received suspicious betting alerts from integrity monitoring partners, an independent investigation was launched, which revealed that the pair had placed bets on MLS matches, including their own teams.

The players were placed on administrative leave in October 2025, while the law firm Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP conducted the investigation and found that Jones and Yeboah engaged in “extensive gambling on soccer” between the 2024 and 2025 domestic seasons.

MLS commissioner Don Garber stated:

“The league will continue to enforce its policies, enhance education efforts, and advocate for the elimination of yellow card wagering in all states to protect the integrity of our competition for clubs, players, and fans.”

One example showed that the two players had placed bets on Jones getting a yellow card during a match between the Columbus Crew and New York Red Bulls on October 19, 2024, with Jones actually being booked in the 35th minute of the game for a foul. It’s also believed that the pair shared similar confidential information with other bettors.

However, during a press release, the MLS stressed that there was no evidence showing that the betting activity had influenced the result of the matches.
