Florida officials call for stricter gambling regulations

After shutting down a major illegal gambling operation that spanned several cities, Florida officials are calling for stricter gambling regulations to combat illegal practices in the state.

According to officials, many businesses just pay small fines and continue operating because the profits they make are much higher than the fines they face.

Chief Ed Cayenne from the Homeland Security Division of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, said:

“There is zero disincentive for these establishments to close down due to the misdemeanours that they face. They are willing to pay the fines and continue the operations because they are so profitable.”

Dan Singleton, an investigator with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, said:

“When we do execute search warrants, we have employees running out the back doors with bags of cash. I don’t know of any other legitimate business that, during normal business hours, when a law enforcement officer comes to the front door, you have an employee flee out the back with a bag of cash.”

Florida keeps monitoring the gambling industry. Earlier, in June 2024, the Florida Governor signed the Gaming Commission privacy law. However, the lack of strong consequences for illegal gambling has allowed criminal networks to advance in the state. Without vital changes, officials worry that illegal gambling will continue to spread, making it even harder to maintain control over the industry.
