Florida to not advance sweepstakes ban in 2025

Florida has officially dismissed proposed Senate Bill 1404 and House Bill 1467, which aimed to ban certain online sweepstakes-style games, announcing that no further moves will be made this year.

The Florida bills, partially supported by Sen. Corey Simon, aimed to outlaw dual-currency sweepstakes games, internet-style casino play, and sports betting not governed by the Seminole Tribe’s compact. If passed, the proposals would have imposed felony-level penalties, even on digital games that don’t resemble traditional gambling.

Opponents criticized, warning they could inadvertently impact well-known promotional campaigns by national brands like McDonald’s and Starbucks. There were also concerns about economic repercussions. Industry advocates argued that such restrictions could limit lawful business activity and potentially widen the state’s budget shortfall.

The Social and Promotional Games Association (SPGA), which has long opposed this kind of restriction on iGaming, welcomed the news, noting that Florida is not the only state that steps back from similar legislation, mentioning Arkansas, Maryland, and Mississippi’s examples.

SPGA representatives called for lawmakers’ direct engagement with gaming companies to build smarter and balanced policies instead of suggesting strict bans.

For now, Florida’s iGaming market gets a temporary relief.
