France leaves iGaming operators in uncertainty
France is facing political challenges that could seriously affect the country’s online gambling market.
Earlier, Prime Minister Michel Barnier proposed the 2025 budget, which included significant tax hikes on online betting operators. It was planned to increase taxes on online sportsbooks, raising rates to more than 70% of gross gaming revenue (GGR).
The tax hike did not receive a warm welcome. It faced strong opposition from industry leaders, including Nicolas Béraud, CEO of Betclic and president of AFJEL, who condemned the tax hikes as an “incomprehensible tax assault.” Despite being removed from the final budget draft, the tax hike topic remains actual as the gambling industry remains uncertain.
The government has been exploring the possibility of introducing iGaming to the French market, with initial discussions beginning this week. However, if Barnier’s government falls, any plans for reform, including the introduction of iGaming, will be delayed until a new administration takes office.
