Gambling Commission shares an update on illegal market crackdown

Tim Miller, executive director at the Gambling Commission, shared the regulator’s latest figures on the illegal gambling market crackdown.

Miller said that from April to early August, the Commission issued 344 cease-and-desist notices to advertisers and operators.

During the same time, 45,674 URLs were reported to search engines, with 30,605 taken down. The regulator also pushed for 235 sites to either shut down or be geo-blocked, and 466 sites to be delisted.

Research released by the Betting and Gaming Council last September suggested that unlicensed operators are “aggressively” targeting UK players, driving black market spending of up to £4.3bn.

With speculation growing that the government may raise gambling taxes in the next Budget, the debate around the black market doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. The Betting and Gaming Council remains outspoken in its opposition to the potential rise.
