Germany hit by iGaming shutdown due to LUGAS glitch

Over the weekend, a technical issue with Germany’s LUGAS regulatory system caused a 10-hour disruption to online gambling services.

The glitch affected the deposit limits supervisory service, a system required for all German gambling operators. Managed by the GGL regulator, the failure prevented new registrations and deposits on legal online gambling sites for the duration of the outage.

GGL stated in a press release:

“Nevertheless, the LUGAS system is designed to ensure that existing customers with existing credit balances can legally participate in games even in the event of a system failure. The GGL was notified shortly after the malfunction occurred and immediately forwarded the information to its IT service provider, Dataport AöR.”

The incident raised concerns in the industry, with critics pointing out that offshore gambling sites remained unaffected and continued to operate.

The German Sports Betting Association’s (DSWV) president, Mathias Dahms, said:

“This is not just about considerable economic damage. If legal sports betting offers cannot be used by customers from Germany on a Bundesliga Saturday, the illegal betting providers, who are very happy to accept new customers and deposits, will benefit first and foremost. There is no player protection in the black market. The German tax authorities are also left empty-handed.”

To avoid future disruptions in Germany’s legal gambling market, Mathias Dahms calls for continued IT support from Dataport.
