Germany increases maximum online slots stake to €5
Effective from July 1, 2026, Germany’s gambling authority (GGL) increased the stake limit for online slots from the previous €1 to a maximum of €5 in an effort to address modern market conditions and improve competitiveness.
Since the launch of the regulated gambling market in Germany, the limit stood at €1 flat, combined with a tiered model based on gambling history and user age. Despite the new limit, the maximum stake for players under 21 will remain at €1, with players aged 21 and above now able to bet €3 per spin. The decision is based on concerns that younger users don’t have the necessary financial stability and are classified as a higher-risk age group.
The highest stake limit of €5 will apply to players who haven’t shown any signs of risky gambling activity during a 3-month period.
Additionally, this is the first time that Germany’s Joint Gambling Authority of the Federal States (GGL) has used its authority granted by the Interstate Treaty on Gambling to introduce reforms to slot stake limits.
Following announcements of the new limits, industry representatives and operators have spoken out in support of the decision, stressing that the measures can strengthen Germany’s channelization rates. According to GGL’s 2025 report, the channelization rate of the regulated market was 77%.
