Google’s gambling ad policy updated for Alberta market

Google has updated its gambling and games ad policy on May 4 to allow operators licensed by the Alberta Gaming, Liquor, and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) to run online gambling advertisements in the province.

In the initial stage, operators will be allowed to promote only brand awareness campaigns in order to comply with the province’s regulatory transition. Google has stated that campaigns must be geo-restricted to Alberta, and the license application of the operators must be submitted for certification if they want to begin advertising before betting opens on July 13, 2026. After the launch of the iGaming market, regular certification requirements will apply for advertisements.

The updated policy includes lotteries, sports betting, online casinos, and fantasy sports, with lotteries required to be either federally licensed or government-run, and other iGaming products to be approved by the province where they are licensed.

Additionally, Alberta has already prohibited the appearance of athletes in gambling ads and has banned the use of bonuses that could lead to risky play. Operators will also have to show the AGLC logo on ads in an effort to demonstrate their regulatory compliance.

Alberta is set to become Canada’s second province, after Ontario, to introduce a regulated iGaming market for operators to offer legal gambling under provincial licenses.
