Guardians’ Emmanuel Clase under gambling investigation
For the 2nd time in less than a month, a Cleveland Guardians pitcher was connected to sports betting fraud. This time, it’s the All-Star closer, Emmanuel Clase.
The Cleveland Guardians reported on July 28 that Clase, one of baseball’s best relievers, was placed on non-disciplinary leave concerning sports betting fraud, as part of Major League Baseball’s ongoing gambling-related investigation.
Cleveland Guardians reported in a statement:
“We have been informed that no additional players or Club personnel are expected to be impacted. The Guardians are not permitted to comment further at this time and will respect the league’s confidential investigative process as we continue to fully cooperate.”
Clase is a 3-time All-Star and has been one of the most feared closers in the game in recent seasons. He has a career 1.88 ERA and 182 career saves.
A statement from Major League Baseball (MLB) read:
“Per an agreement with the MLBPA, Cleveland Guardians pitcher Emmanuel Clase has been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave through games on August 31st while MLB continues its sports betting investigation. We will not comment further until the investigation has been completed.”
Less than a month ago, on July 3, another Cleveland Guardians pitcher, Luis Ortiz, was placed on indefinite leave. MLB said in a statement that Ortiz was being put on “non-disciplinary leave through the end of the All-Star break” for the investigation.
