Illegal bookmaker Bowyer gets early release from prison

Less than six months into his prison sentence, Matt Bowyer received an early release from federal prison on March 9, 2026.

Shohei Ohtani’s ex-interpreter’s  U.S. illegal bookmaker Matt Bowyer faced jail in a betting scandal, and in August 2025, he received a 12-month sentence and was sent to a minimum-security prison camp at FCI Lompoc.

According to a filing from the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, Bowyer reported to a halfway house in San Pedro, which is a facility located 50 miles north of his residence in Orange County.

In a video, Bowyer stated:

“All I can tell you is I’m very humble and grateful for my experience in a federal prison. I’m halfway home, so it feels great. I had a lot of ups and a lot of downs. I met a lot of great people and a lot of lowlifes. You’re going to hear a lot more about it.”

Meanwhile, as Bowyer was in prison, Nevada regulators put him on a blacklist that bans him from every licensed casino in the state, making him the 38th person to be placed on the list known as the “black book” in Nevada.

Back in August 2024, Bowyer pleaded guilty to money laundering charges, tax evasion, and illegal bookmaking.
