Illegal sports betting: still actual in Massachusetts
Massachusests still faces challenges of illegal betting in spite of its legalization since 2022.
Massachusetts, officially the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, is a state in the New England region of the Northeastern United States. The state legalized sports betting in 2022 and started offering retail options in 2023.
However, a recent study from the UMass School of Public Health and Health Sciences reveals that illegal betting remains a significant issue in the state. In fact, many bettors continue to use illegal providers in spite of the availability of legal options. 2022’s reports results show 33.9%, and 2023’s results show 31.9% of illegal betting cases.
The study stated:
“Taken together, these data suggest that there was not a substantial recapture of illegal sports betting revenues in Massachusetts between 2022 and 2023. However, as many jurisdictions internationally have found, it can take a substantial period of time for sports bettors to migrate fully from non-regulated to regulated providers.”
Starting from the official launch of legal betting, the state has collected around $166.61 million in taxes.
While the use of legal betting options increased from 86.5% in 2022 to 93.2% in 2023, the study highlights that transitioning bettors from illegal to regulated options can be a slow process, as seen in other regions.
