Indonesia suspends officials involved in illegal gambling

Indonesia, a Muslim-majority country where gambling is strictly monitored, announced that the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital has suspended 11 employees who were suspected of being involved in illegal online gambling activities.

Employees were arrested after police investigations revealed that, in spite of taking their responsibilities and monitoring illegal operations, the employees abused their power and drew millions of players to illegal platforms. The ministry has set a deadline of seven days for the temporary dismissal of the suspended employees following their detention.

Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid confirmed the suspension and stated that more employees are under investigation. She emphasized the government’s commitment to enforcing laws against gambling and maintaining transparency in the process. If convicted, the employees face potential termination from their positions. This follows a previous incident involving another ministry worker.

The arrests are part of a larger government effort to combat digital crime, specifically in the online gambling sector.  Recently, the country announced that it got rid of 3.8 million gambling sites in 14 months.

The ministry will continue monitoring the situation and will take further action based on the investigation’s results.
