Indonesia uses AI to combat illegal gambling

Lawmakers in Indonesia, a Muslim-majority country where gambling is strictly monitored, confirmed the use of AI to block illegal gambling content.

Despite strict gambling bans in the country, there is still a strong passion for betting. The biggest concern for Indonesia is the involvement of younger age groups. More than 960,000 gamblers are students.

Earlier this year, in June, Indonesia blocked websites connected to illegal operations.

Meutya Hafid, the head of the rebranded ministry, commented:

“If we count from October 20, the number of closed sites has reached around 380,000. That includes some 300,000 illegal IP addresses and thousands of ads on internet platforms like Meta, Google, and Twitter.”

According to the reports from 2023, gamblers lost RP327 trillion, which equals $20.5 billion. This is almost 1.5% of the nation’s GDP.

Juda Agung, deputy governor of Bank Indonesia, said:

“Both banks and non-banks must have fraud detection systems to identify accounts used for online gambling.”

Together with tightened gambling regulations, the Indonesian government will transform the use of AI into a more powerful tool for detecting fraudulent actions and educating the public.
