Ireland calls for license registration under new gambling law

The Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) requested the betting and gaming companies, including bookmakers and tech developers, to register their interest in obtaining a gambling license under the country’s new framework.
After GRAI’s launch on March 5, the regulator is preparing now for the launch of the new system, which requires all companies offering betting, gaming, or lottery services in Ireland to apply for a license under the Gambling Act of 2024.
This new regulation is a significant update to Ireland’s gambling laws, which haven’t been revised since the 1930s. The Gambling Act, introduced in 2022, is designed to address the needs of today’s digital-driven gambling market. Ireland’s iGaming sector is expected to reach €1.2bn in revenue by 2025, with more coming from retail betting, casinos, and lotteries.
The GRAI will issue three types of licenses:
- For operators,
- For tech firms,
- For charity organizations focusing on gambling harm prevention.
These changes reflect growing concerns about the social impact of gambling, such as harm related to the activity and its connection to sports.
To ensure a smooth transition, the GRAI is encouraging both current and future license holders to register now. The full regulatory control will debut in 2026, following some preliminary steps that began in 2025.
