Ireland targets Polymarket over suspicious election bets

Ireland’s Finance Minister Simon Harris has raised concerns over abnormal betting activity on Polymarket connected to the Dublin Central bye-election held on May 15, 2026, ordering officials to launch an investigation into the suspicious patterns.

The concerns are based on a report published by the Irish Times, which revealed that suspicious bets were placed on Gerry Hutch not winning a seat during the election. The report also stressed that this kind of activity may be an indicator of market manipulation and money laundering.

Minister Harris commented:

“The developments that we have seen reported in recent days around the use of polymarkets to place suspicious bets on Irish elections also raise grave concerns for me. What seems to be developing at a global scale and indeed, a rapid pace now is a kind of Wild West where people are placing bets in the form of cryptocurrency in a secretive, murky, and unregulated manner. I have asked my officials today to do a deep-dive analysis into this area.”

The Minister stated that the Department of Justice, the Gambling Regulator, and Ireland’s Central Bank must also participate in the investigation to uncover potential financial crimes.

Harris added:

“There are two elements from my perspective to this: there’s the element of gambling, and it is classified as gambling, and therefore, the potential role for the gambling regulator. And then, secondly, the potential concern that this is a vehicle that could be used in terms of money laundering as well.”

However, Harris shared that he doesn’t believe that any candidate was involved in the betting or engaged in any wrongdoing regarding money laundering issues.
