Italy to impose a new mandatory age verification for players
The Media and Communications Authority of Italy, AGCOM, has announced the new ‘technical measure’ to impose “mandatory age verification to ensure the adulthood of Italian audiences.”
This new measure is a part of the country’s efforts to safeguard children from material that could harm their physical, mental, or moral development. Consequently, Italian media platforms have to verify the age of users before allowing them to have access to content related to gambling or any other adult-themed social media platform.
AGCOM proposed to the government:
“The measure enforces stronger age verification mechanisms to protect minors from content harmful to their physical, mental, or moral development, requiring stricter safeguards across information society services.”
The verification process will use Italy’s Public Digital Identity System (SPID) or another form of digital identity. This will ensure that only adults can view such content while maintaining user privacy through a “double anonymity” model. Moreover, social media platforms will not store or track the verification data, adding an extra layer of security.
AGCOM has informed the European Commission (EC) about the new measure. After a thorough review, the EC will decide whether the new measure is in compliance with the EU rules on data and user privacy.
Moreover, very soon, the Ministry of Economy and Finance plans to introduce a new online gambling license in Italy, which will cost €7 million for nine years.
