Kenya tightens gambling laws: ads, age limits & regulation
After the 30-day nationwide ban on all gambling advertisements, Kenya has now come up with a bunch of new and stricter laws from the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB).
The pause on gambling advertisements was meant to act as a “reset button,” giving authorities time to address growing concerns, especially about younger age groups that are being exposed to gambling.
Now, under the new laws, betting companies can no longer use motivating phrases like “bet now” in their ads. Next, every advertisement must dedicate at least 20% of its space to responsible gambling messages. Moreover, before going live, the advertisement must first be approved by the BCLB and then reviewed by the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB). In case of rejection from any side, the content will not be published live.
However, there is still more to come. The Media Council, the Communications Authority, and even the Directorate of Criminal Investigations will be requiring regular checks from the operators.
Kenya’s oversight is more than advertisement restrictions
Under the bill introduced back in 2023, Kenya plans to implement strict measures such as age checks, mandatory responsible gambling programs, new licensing rules, and even a new regulatory body.
Currently, the bill is in Parliament with no clear timeline for a vote.
